Instead of focusing on punishment, try modeling behavior and using positive reinforcement to help improve your child's behavior.
Create a Structured Environment
When a child has ADHD, having a structured day can be very beneficial. Structure allows your child to know what to expect so he or she can better focus on the task at hand. Try to wake up your child at the same time each day, establish routines around meal times, and do the same thing each evening when it is time for bed.
Break Up Tasks Into Smaller Pieces
Since children with ADHD have a difficult time focusing on specific things, it is not a good idea to overwhelm your child with large tasks. Try to simplify things by breaking up tasks into smaller pieces. When it comes to homework, have your child work for several minutes, and then give him or her a break to relax and unwind before finishing the assignment. You may also consider making a chore calendar that divides chores into different days, rather than expecting your child to be able to complete several chores each day on the weekends.
Limit the Distractions in Your Home
It is extremely common for children with ADHD to become easily distracted. When you need your child to engage and focus, it is essential to remove all distractions; distractions can include things like televisions, tablets, and video game consoles.
